BrightBytes Technology Survey available through June 1

It’s time for the spring technology survey to help the Sparta Area School District gauge technology access and equity.

A survey link for each individual school is available on the Spartan.org website to help the district better understand student and parent/guardian needs in regard to technology. Students will be completing the survey at school with teachers. Participation is voluntary, however, appreciated as information is used in planning curriculum and instruction.

For example, the fall survey results indicated teachers wanted more training on integrating technology in the classroom to increase student learning. On June 12 and 13, the Sparta Area School District will host Digital Learning Days, a grant-funded initiative that targets technology integration such as using student driven video in classrooms, apps for learning, and how to collect student learning data to improve outcomes. This learning event, funded through TEACH monies, will be in cooperation with the Tomah School District, Norwalk-Ontario-Wilton School District, Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau School District and Hillsboro School District.

“We are very pleased with the information gathered from the fall survey results. They set the benchmark for measuring technology integration and learning for both students and adults,” said Liz Dostal, Director of Instruction. “Having this information allows us to continually improve access and opportunity for all students in the Sparta Area School District.”

The more students and parents who complete the survey, the more the district understands the role technology plays in every day life.

To access the link for your school, please visit the Sparta Area School District’s website for a complete listing of survey links by schools: www.spartan.org/district/administrative-departments/instructional-services/brightbytes-survey/

Amy Van Deuren, Ed.D., J.D., has been selected by the Sparta School Board to be the next Superintendent of Schools of the Sparta Area School District. Dr. Van Deuren currently is the high school principal at West Allis Central High School in West Allis, Wis. She has a diverse background in education serving as a high school music director, a public education principal, a university professor and a member of a school board.

Dr. Van Deuren has a noteworthy academic background. She has a Bachelor of Music from UW-Madison, a Master of Music Education from the University of Utah, a law degree from the S. J. Quinney School of Law, University of Utah and a Doctorate from National Louis University in Educational Leadership.

While her current focus is on public education, she has spent five years in law and business as the owner/attorney of a law firm and the owner/manager of a mortgage corporation.

When asked, Dr. Van Deuren indicated she was very honored to be selected as the educational leader in Sparta. “I’m excited about serving the Sparta Area School District as we continue to move in a positive direction for students, staff, parents, and the community,” she said.  “I look forward to living in Sparta and being an active community member.”

Twenty-one candidates applied for the position. The Board, with the assistance of an Advisory Committee comprised of 20 staff and community members, interviewed six candidates for the position and narrowed the finalists to three candidates. Dr. Van Deuren’s breadth of experiences factored in to her selection as the next superintendent, and her contract start date is July 1, 2017. She is replacing John Hendricks who has served the Sparta Area School District as Superintendent for the last 14 years.

Cataract Garden

Students (L to R) Adeline Gore, Jocelin Anderson, Theron Wright, and Victor Bollig help to plant the Cataract School Garden.

Cataract School planted its school garden this week. Parent helper and volunteer Khrissy Jerome worked with the students to plant five garden boxes with community volunteer Pat Nugent assisting. Each grade Pre-K through Grade 3 had their own box to plant. Families offer to care and harvest the gardens over the summer break and a schedule is set up.

“Environmental student activity allows students the opportunity to learn about gardening as well as incorporating all curricular areas,” Principal Missy Herek said. “Each year the students and staff take pride in this project.”
The garden boxes installed at the school have allowed for the children to plant during the spring; parents volunteer to care for them during the summer and harvest.

Lamers Bus Lines hosts “Drive the Bus” Job Fair on July 25 at Meadowview Middle School in Sparta

School bus driver shortages are a serious issue for school bus companies this summer, and these companies only have a limited amount of time to find, hire and train these drivers before the next school year starts.

Lamers Bus Lines will be hosting a “Drive the Bus” job fair at Meadowview Middle School, 1225 N. Water St., in Sparta, on Tuesday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This event will feature immediate interviews for job seekers, opportunities to talk to current school bus drivers, and a test drive of a big yellow school bus on a closed course with a Lamers Bus Lines trainer. Applicants will be able to see first-hand how to operate a school bus.

“We take great pride in giving back to our local schools and students,” says Allen Lamers, President of Lamers Bus Lines. “Our drive-the-bus event gives families a chance to come out, learn about school bus safety, and see what it takes to be a bus driver.”

In order to be considered for school bus driving positions, candidates will need:

• A good driving record.
• At least 4 years of experience driving ANY vehicle and to be at least 21 years old.
• To pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check.

Lamers Bus Lines is also looking for school bus aides in Sparta. At the open houses, anyone interested in learning more about school bus driving or becoming an aide can stop by, fill out an application, and sit down for an immediate interview.

Transportation companies around the U.S. are experiencing CDL driver shortages but driving for Lamers Bus Lines is a completely different type of CDL driving. Driving school bus allows for flexible schedules and the ability to be home every night. In addition, wages are typically higher than other part-time jobs.

Lamers Bus Lines offers complete, paid driver training. Though previous experience is always appreciated, it isn’t a requirement. All new drivers take part in the Lamers Driving Academy, which includes classroom and behind-the-wheel training so they can become safe and knowledgeable drivers. School Bus driving is an entry-level position and many drivers have moved to coach driving, office staff and management throughout the company.

“Many new school bus drivers are surprised to learn how easy it is to operate a school bus. You need to make allowances for the length and turning – what we call tail swing – but the buses in our fleet all have automatic transmissions, and power steering,” says Sparta Assistant Manager, Bridget Kimpel. “Once you get a chance to get behind the wheel, you’ll realize you were worried about nothing.

Lamers Bus Lines is Wisconsin’s largest family-owned school bus and motor coach company and an exclusive member of the International Motorcoach Group (IMG) — a group dedicated to providing premier ground transportation to each and every client through elevated standards of performance in the areas of safety, maintenance, customer service, driver training, equipment, operations and on-road support. New Campus Security Measure – Raptor Visitor Management System

$
0
0

The Sparta Area School District is pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System in all our district schools to build on the district’s program of campus safety for students and faculty. Part of keeping students and faculty safe is knowing who is in our building at all times, and the Raptor system will allow us to do that. The Raptor system will better allow us to track visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools and provide us with a safer environment for our students and staff.

Upon entering a district building, visitors will be asked to present a valid state-issued ID, which will be scanned into the system. The Raptor system will check to ensure that registered sexual offenders are not entering our buildings. It is important to note that the Raptor system only scans the visitor’s name, date of birth, and photo for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. Additional visitor data from the driver’s license is not gathered nor is the system connected to any other system such as the Department of Motor Vehicles. Therefore, any other information on the ID is not scanned by the system and is not accessible to any of the users. Once entry is approved, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit.

A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork. If a person does not have identification, he/she can still be given access to the building, but will be escorted by a school staff member.

If you are interested in learning more about the Raptor visitor management system, please visit the Raptor Technologies website (www.raptortech.com). If you have any questions for the district personnel, please contact Leah Hauser or Dr. Amy Van Deuren at 608-269-3151.

The safety of our students is our highest priority, and the Raptor system provides a consistent way to aid in keeping away people who may present a danger to our students. Therefore, all visitors to the school must be scanned into the system and obtain a visitor badge. Thank you in advance for your understanding and support of enhancing school safety protocols in our district.

SASD Invests in Busing Improvements

Sparta students who take the bus to school will experience an improved commute this year, thanks to Sparta Area School District’s new transportation plan.  The plan, which was recently approved by the Board of Education for the 2017-2018 school year decreases average ride times and pushes back the earliest morning pick-up time by nearly half an hour.

Changes to the transportation plan come in response to feedback the district received last year, when parents expressed their concerns about long ride times and early morning pick-up times for students.  The district took notice, and began working with Lamers Bus Lines to create a plan that would be both budget-friendly and effective in addressing two main goals: eliminating pick-up times before 6:00 a.m., and reducing average ride times for students.  The selected plan succeeds in meeting these goals by adding three buses and a minivan to transport students to and from school.  In addition to reducing average ride times, the new plan lessens the longest ride time by over twenty minutes.

“I am excited that the Sparta Area School District and Lamers were able to agree on a budget conscious solution that addresses our concerns of ride times and efficiency while continuing to maximize safety for our students.” says Leah Hauser, Director of Business Services at Sparta Area School District.  The district will work to continue to improve its transportation systems, with its ultimate goal to reduce ride times to under an hour for every student.

Lamers Bus Lines, the Sparta Area School District school bus contractor, is seeking school bus drivers to drive District field/co-curricular/athletic trips and to drive as substitute route drivers. Training is provided.  Learn more by calling Becky or Bridget at 366-1925 or visit www.GoLamers.com/employment.

Community Survey on Educational Facilities Needs Coming Soon

$
0
0

The Sparta Area School District Board of Education is reaching out to all District residents in the next few weeks to gather input about educational facilities needs with a community-wide survey. The School Board approved the survey to gather citizen feedback on the need to add elementary capacity and address educational inadequacies.

The District studied current needs and future enrollment projections. Working in partnership with architects, educational leaders, the Facilities Committee and the Community Task Force, numerous options were considered as the District drafted a long-range facility plan that will meet the needs of all students.

“Developing a facilities plan that considers district growth and educational needs in the context of our current schools is extremely complex,” explains Dr. Amy Van Deuren, the District’s Superintendent.  “We also need to factor in the cost to update and operate existing facilities as well as future growth and development in our community.  What we do with our schools now will impact the shape of the community for decades to come.”

The District now has recommendations for each school building. These recommendations will be tested on the survey as well as the community’s willingness to support building a new elementary school and moving 4th grade students back into the elementary schools.

Van Deuren adds, “We went through an extensive process to develop our facilities plan and this survey.  We will continue to follow that process to ensure that in the end our schools reflect the needs and values of our community.  These are important decisions with lasting impacts.”

The District has upcoming community meetings where citizens can ask questions about the proposed plan and the survey.  These meetings will be held on November 7 and 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sparta Administrative and Education Center (AEC), 201 E. Franklin Street, Sparta.

The School Board recognizes that a finalized plan must reflect the priorities of taxpayers. Therefore, the district is urging all residents to participate in this important district-wide effort as they prepare to make important decisions about potential facilities projects.

To assist with data gathering efforts, the School Board is working with School Perceptions LLC, an independent Wisconsin firm with expertise in conducting school district surveys. All survey data is returned to School Perceptions and all information will remain anonymous.

All District residents will receive a paper survey in the mail on or around November 8, 2017 and can take the survey in one of two ways. The survey has a website listed that allows a respondent to log on and complete the survey, or respondents can complete the paper survey and mail it back to School Perceptions in the envelope provided.

“Our schools are a critical part of our community,” shares Van Deuren, “as we work to improve our schools we want to ensure that they will meet the needs of our students and community both now and in the future.  Therefore, the voice of every resident is critical to this process.”

Survey results will be presented at the December 12 School Board meeting and will also be available on the district website at www.spartan.org.

To assist with data gathering efforts, the School Board is working with School Perceptions LLC, an independent Wisconsin firm with expertise in conducting school district surveys. All survey data is returned to School Perceptions and all information will remain anonymous.

All District residents received a paper survey in the mail or around November 8, 2017 and can take the survey in one of two ways.

Community Survey Deadline Extended

The deadline to complete the community survey regarding the school district’s facility needs has been extended to December 11th. A printing error resulted in some residents not initially receiving the survey. Those who have not yet received a paper survey in their mail should be receiving a survey in the coming days. The deadline was extended to ensure all residents have adequate time to respond to the survey.

The community-wide survey is gathering citizen input on how the District should address elementary capacity needs, educational inadequacies and safety and security updates identified in the District.

School Perceptions, the company hired to conduct the survey and analyze the data, will present preliminary survey results at the Board of Education meeting on December 12th.

For additional information, please contact the District at (608) 366-3400.
